![]() I’ve only done it with plastic bottles and the like. I am a novice when it comes to cutting with swords. I’d say this sword bears some resemblance to multiple different swords – a falchion (which is a one-handed sword), a two-handed saber (there are some two-handed sabers out there, but not really with a longsword hilt), a messer (blade profile, but obviously not the knife handle construction), and even fairly similar to a katana. I’m not a historian, but spent some time looking online and didn’t find much in the way of historical single-edged longswords. The pommel (T3, I believe - not a true scent stopper) and guard are very much in my preferred style, and the simple leather wrap looked better online than most of the other RK Euro swords. ![]() It’s not a true falchion, of course, but it cosplays as one on the weekend. ![]() When I saw the RK #10, I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve been eyeing a few falchions for awhile now, as there’s something very elegant about the design of them overall. The blade of this one is of the cusped variant style similar to a Gross Messer that was in use from the 13th to the 16th centuries, with a fuller to lighten the blade slightly and optimize the balance and scent stopper pommel. This two handed style was commonly seen in medieval manuscripts (especially depicting heathens and unbelievers), though as there are no surviving historical examples are out there, is not based on any particular historical sword. This particular model is a two handed 'War Falchion' - a common battlefield weapon favored by the average medieval soldier or archer, though was used by all classes for its deadly effectiveness against lightly armored opponents. Simply amazing value for money and a return to affordable medieval swords where every other maker has doubled or tripled their prices means that they will sell out fast, so grab one while you can! The swords vary in design and while not based on any particular medieval sword are historically plausible and designed to exhibit great handling and cutting dynamics rarely found at this price point. But no reason to stop there, these swords can easily cut water filled bottles of all shaped and sizes, super thick bamboo, tatami mats, you name it - they can handle it! Specs will vary slightly from piece to piece.Taking a decades worth of experience with the best sword forges in Longquan (whose own sword making history dates back THOUSANDS of years) and combining it with the best practices of modern, fully functional European sword replicas - the end result is Ronin Katana's line of high quality, hand forged battle ready medieval swords - now available for immediate shipping at a price that practically any enthusiast can afford.Įach sword in this range is hand forged from top quality 1075 carbon steel, properly heat treated for strength and flexibility and sharpened so you can use them for cutting straight out of the box (or if you prefer, used to cut up the box, though be sure to take out the form fitting Styrofoam, added to protect against damage in transit). The blade is hand forged & folded Swedish powder steel (K120C) with Hi in a traditional Shinogi Zukuri style. ![]() The blackened iron Tsubaon the Ronin Katana depicts Asano’s followers on their vengeful march. Paul Chen's Ronin Koshirae Katana captures the spirit of Lord Asano’s 47 Ronin. They are buried together at the Sengakuji, offering a true testament to the loyalty inherent in the Samurai. For their actions the Ronin were themselves sentenced to death by seppuku. After a fierce battle, the Ronin demanded that Kira commit seppuku for his transgressions against their former master. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano’s death, 47 of Asano’s men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge. This act led to Asano’s ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. ![]() The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. ![]()
